1 2 Newark-on-Trent boasts one of the finest Georgian market squares in the UK and has many wonderful places to stay.
Newark is a market town that is full of history with a dramatic castle and two museums. Oliver Cromwell fought battles against the Royalists just outside Newark and King John was poisoned and died at the Castle.
It is within easy reach of the Roman City of Lincoln and on the edge of Sherwood Forest – home of Robin Hood.
Newark has a year-long programme of events – from Continental Markets, Jazz & Food Festivals and Carnivals to Civil War re-enactments.
Newark hosts Europe’s largest Antiques Fair, which is held six times a year and is close to Southwell Racecourse, another popular attraction with its all weather track hosting races throughout the year. Newark Showground is a venue for many interesting events including the national Lamma event (the UK’s largest agricultural machinery show) and Sutton on Trent’s annual Steam Threshing Festival.
There are a variety of pubs ranging from historic, timber-framed period inns to modern vibrant bars. There is also a floating barge pub moored near the castle. In addition to pubs and restaurants Newark has a number of night clubs playing a mix of popular music. The Palace Theatre has a good mix of drama, music and film.
Newark has a wide range of shops with most of the popular high street stores.
